The VW Transporter has 4 roof rack mounting points on each side of the van (5 on the long wheelbase), each point is an M6 threaded hole in the roof, covered by a cap with a 5mm Allen key head.
On some versions of the Transporter (most commonly the caravelle), there is sometimes an alternate T-Track roof rack mounting system, which is a slotted aluminium extrusion which bolts can be slotted into. This is much less common than the standard bolt hole fittings described above.
The roof of the Transporter is slightly curved, so the middle leg brackets are shorter than the front and the back, making sure the roof rack is level.
